This week is one of my favorite wine events of the year (although as I recently moved to a suburb of Tel Aviv, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to make it)… the Jerusalem wine festival at the Israel Museum!

The annual wine festival held in the sculpture garden of the Israel Museum has, since its inception six years ago, proven to be one of the most pleasant wine events of the year, attracting wine lovers who range in their level of wine appreciation from beginners to the most sophisticated. No less important, the festival has always proven a lively but civil and civilized event, the vast majority coming to sample wines, to enjoy the atmosphere and to meet friends over glasses of wine.
This year’s event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (4, 5 and 6 August) between the hours of 19:00-23:00 and as usual is sponsored by part by the city in cooperation with the city’s two major wine stores, Avi Ben and Shachar. Admission to the fair, which includes a tasting glass and unlimited tastings, is scheduled to be NIS 60 per person. There will also be a sales outlet on the premises at which one can purchase the wines on exhibit at somewhat reduced prices.
Among the wineries participating – Tishbi, Avidan, Tzuba, Psagot, Bravdo, Pelter, Segal, Barkan, Yatir, Carmel, Kadesh Barnea, Asif, Tzion, Tulip Saslove, Alexander, Dalton, Tzora, Noach, Recanati, Ella Valley Vineyards, Galil Mountain, the Golan Heights Winery, Tabor, Teperberg and Binyamina.

Boycott Israeli wine! No, really, start a boycott of Israeli wine! Have I gone nuts? Too much time in Israel has made me anti-Israel? No, rather, perhaps you should boycott Israeli wine because that will lead to more Israeli wine being bought!
Does that make any sense? Well, yes, this is what happened last April when a group of Canadians called for a boycott of Israeli wine – the community went out and bought Israeli wine.
Of course I don’t really think that you should buy Israeli wine as a way to respond to those who hate Israel. I also don’t even think you should buy Israeli wine to “support Israel.” Rather, you should buy Israeli wine because it’s good. And, you know what, don’t buy the wine that’s not – force the winemakers to improve.
But, while I don’t ordinarily delve into the realm of politics – Israeli wine should be enjoyed by all. When we talk about California wine or French wine or Australian wine, we don’t delve into the realm of French or American or Australian politics, either. Hopefully, the only politics is about the wine industry like Dr. Vino (who has a real PhD in Political Science) has done in his book Wine Politics.

Inside a candlelit room at a west Houston Italian restaurant, the Israeli government sought to change Israel’s international image with help from one of the world’s oldest industries: wine — glasses and glasses of wine.
The government recently teamed up with its wine industry and U.S. importers to promote the beverages made from grapes grown on the land immortalized by biblical figures Noah, Samson, and David and Goliath.
These days, Israel is known more for conflict and tension than for its wines, local Israeli government officials said.
“Israeli wine can help rebrand Israel,” said wine importer Richard Shaffer, who is working with the government by hosting wine-tasting parties.
Wine production began in Israel millennia ago, Shaffer said, peppering his wine dinner speech with biblical references.

Living in Israel and not having been abroad for two years gave me a warped perspective on Israeli wine. Not bad, of course, but I separate the world of Israel and the world of Jewish and kosher wine. In Israel, you can go in the finest wine shops and see a bottle of the now-kosher Yarden HeightsWine, Domaine du Castel ‘C’, and Tzora Blanc next to to the not-kosher Pelter, Clos du Gat, and Tulip wineries. Go to the finest non-kosher restaurant in Tel Aviv and, along with a full array of shrimp and shellfish, you will see Castel and Yatir and Carmel Single Vineyard on the wine menu.
But, as I recently discovered on a visit to a wine shop in Maryland, that’s not the case abroad. There, below the Yarden Sauvignon Blanc, will be some Herzog Zinfandel not near the rest of the Zin, and below that will be half a row of the atrocious thing called Manishewitz (I was seriously tempted to yell at the store owner for even stocking that and calling it wine!), made in New York. They have nothing to do with each other and, as I’ve often said, where is the Israeli section? Kosher is not a country!
Can you tell me how to change this?
